A highly decorative 17th-century Jacobean oak chest on stand, of particularly unusual and distinctive form, with an elaborate moulded and panelled front and strongly architectural construction.

The upper chest is fitted with a series of graduated drawers, retaining their original brass furniture, the central drawer unusually having been zinc-lined, suggesting its original practical use. The drawers run on traditional side runners. The front is exceptionally well articulated with moulded panels, turned pilasters and a finely carved and moulded frieze, while the sides are fully panelled and similarly decorated.

The chest stands upon its original Jacobean base, raised on substantial turned and ringed legs joined by characteristic arched and shaped stretchers. The construction is particularly appealing, with the upper chest separating from the stand for ease of transport, as originally designed.circa 1690
