A handsome English oak wainscot armchair, probably late 17th century, with a particularly attractive carved and shaped cresting rail above a broad fielded-panel back. The chair has shaped and swept arms with turned supports, raised on turned front legs with moulded feet and joined by stretchers.
The chair retains a wonderfully dark, mellow colour and naturally worn surface, with good evidence of age throughout. The broad solid seat and substantial construction give it the imposing character associated with early English oak furniture.
