Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this exceptional French chinoiserie commode by Walter Comelli, dating from the 1950s.
The bombe-form commode is decorated with an atmospheric chinoiserie landscape of mountains, trees, figures and Oriental buildings, enriched with elaborate gilt-bronze rocaille mounts and surmounted by a shaped marble top. The wonderfully aged craquelure to the lacquer gives the piece considerable character.
Signed Comelli, this is a particularly striking example of his celebrated French lacquer work, combining traditional 18th-century techniques with the exuberant decorative style of mid-century France.
