A rare and characterful French oak prayer stool, carved with the date 1760 beneath the top, confirming its mid-18th-century origin. Constructed in solid oak with a pleasingly naïve, rustic form, the stool stands on turned legs united by stretchers, retaining a rich, time-worn surface and deep colour throughout.
The original kneeling platform remains intact, showing honest wear consistent with age and use. The top has softly rounded edges from centuries of handling, and the piece is sturdy and well-balanced.
Now highly versatile, it lends itself beautifully to alternative use as a side or lamp table, with the lower platform serving perfectly as a magazine or bookshelf.
A genuine and evocative piece of French devotional furniture, full of patina and historical presence, and offered for sale by Hutton-Clarke Antiques.
