Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this striking Japanese black lacquer chest dating from the Meiji period (late 19th century).
The chest features an elegant domed top and is decorated on all sides with finely detailed gilt and brown lacquer scenes, allowing it to be displayed freely within a room rather than against a wall. The decoration shows traditional Japanese motifs, executed with a restrained and attractive hand typical of the period.
It retains its original fretted brass lock plate and working key, a particularly pleasing detail, along with matching brass side fittings. The interior is finished in a rich reddish-brown lacquer and remains clean and practical for storage.
The chest sits on a fixed raised stand, giving it good presence and making it ideal as a blanket chest, hall piece, or statement storage item.
In good original condition overall, with expected surface wear and patina consistent with age, adding to its authenticity and charm.
