Hutton-Clarke Antiques are delighted to offer this charming pair of late 19th century French walnut fauteuils, circa 1890.
Crafted in solid walnut with good, strong frames, these elegant armchairs are made in the style of the earlier Louis XV period, echoing the graceful curves and flowing lines of mid-18th century French design. The serpentine front rails are richly carved with scrolling acanthus detail, and the chairs stand on refined cabriole legs terminating in well-defined scroll feet. The shaped arms sweep beautifully from the supports, and the walnut has developed a warm, mellow patina that enhances the depth of the carving.
Both fauteuils retain their original tapestry upholstery in an attractively time-worn, shabby chic condition. The backs are decorated with romantic pastoral scenes framed by foliate scrollwork, with complementary decoration across the seats. The softly faded palette of creams, sage tones and muted terracotta adds to their authentic French country charm. Age-related wear to the fabric is present and contributes to their decorative appeal.
Structurally sound and comfortable, with solid joints and no movement, these chairs are ready for use. They would sit perfectly in a drawing room, bedroom or boutique interior scheme, bringing a touch of 18th century elegance interpreted through late 19th century craftsmanship.
