Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this handsome pair of late 19th century French walnut armchairs, raised on elegant cabriole “mouton” legs and retaining their original character and charm.
Crafted in solid walnut, the frames are well carved throughout, with scrolling arms terminating in tight volutes and supported by shaped uprights with subtle foliate detail. The seat rails are finished with close-set brass studwork, providing a refined contrast to the warm, mellow tone of the timber. The front legs sweep gracefully into pronounced scroll feet and are united by a shaped and carved stretcher — a feature typical of quality provincial French work of the period.
The chairs retain their good, usable upholstery in a classical woven floral fabric in soft rose and muted cream tones. The fabric shows honest wear consistent with age, giving the pair an inviting country-house feel while remaining perfectly serviceable as they stand.
A solid and weighty pair with strong frames and generous proportions, ideal for a drawing room, library, bedroom or hall. Seat height 45 cm
Height 113 cm , 65 width , depth 73 cmFrench, circa 1880–1900.
