Hutton-Clarke Antiques is pleased to offer this pair of primitive Welsh comb-back chairs, circa 1890. Constructed in elm, these robust country chairs display the hallmarks of traditional Welsh stick furniture, with curved stick arms, spindle backs, and shaped seats raised on splayed legs.
Both chairs are stamped W.H. on the back of the seats, adding an intriguing maker’s or owner’s mark. One chair shows the addition of later leg supports, a sympathetic adaptation reflecting their continued use over time.
The original green-painted surface survives in a beautifully worn state, giving them rich patina and rustic authenticity. Honest in form and practical in design, they embody the vernacular craftsmanship of rural 19th-century Wales.
A rare and decorative pair of stamped chairs, perfect for collectors of Welsh furniture or as distinctive statement pieces within a farmhouse or cottage interior.
