A stunning rare 19th century Zanzibar or Bombay, circa 1870. Made in solid rosewood with excellent colour and patination, a small example of it's kind. The exterior of the chest is embellished with brass studs in geometric patterns, particularly pyramidal shapes mounted by crosses, representing the Fountain of Youth. These dowry chests were often used in the export of spices, rugs, and silks to the West in the 18th and 19th centuries, East Africa. Below the candle drawer is a secret compartment.
